And as I noticed It's now up here I decided to celebrate the new contributional spirit by posting a rapidshare link to the "missing" track by Isaac Hayes, the instrumental Type Thang. It's featured in the movie but not on the album for contractual reasons. Maybe someone's got the actual single? The A side is Theme from the Men, the Blaxploitation action TV series that Isaac scored.

Also, though I have no album cover picture. I'd Like to post requests for:
The Baron 1977 Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson (Arista)
J. Steiger - Solomon King 1974 (Super rare!)
Black Shampoo 1976 Gerald Lee Dimension Pictures Records
Black Rodeo 1972 (Ray Charles, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin)
Blackjack 1978 (Soundtrack by Motown session man Jack Ashford Ruff Stuff Records)
The Black Connection aka Run!, Nigger Run! 1974 + The Checkmates Ltd. Single
Smoke - The Candy Tangerine Man 1975 (Self titled LP features several cuts from the movie)
Johnny Taylor - Disco 9000 1976
Infernal Blues Machine - Adiós Amigo 1976
The Legend of Nigger Charley 1972 + Lloyd Price Theme song single
Gordon Staples - Mean Johnny Barrows 1976 + Single Strung Out (From the LP of the same name by The
Motown Strings)

Just commenting that the Smokey Robinson uploader himself should be credited, it's a lot of work actually putting these things up, as some of you know :

http://fullundie.blogspot.com/2008/05/smokey-robinsons-big-time-ost.html

Simon666 said...

Hi Funkback -
Thanks for that, but I don't think it's actually from "Shaft's Big Score". Isaac Hayes himself was not involved with this production - movie or soundtrack - and all reports and discographies say that this is the B-side of Isaac Hayes' theme from "The Men". But anyway if I'm wrong, could you give me a reference for that info ?
Thanks,
Simon

I will try to look for those ost request. Definitely not going to be easy finding them. I will put some of the album request on the main page to people can see what we are searching. Thanks everybody. I like the way this forum has started and if we all work together, then I think we all will have a one of a kind music collection. People will be jealous of our treasures, lol.

Hey Funkback -

Sorry to doubt you! Carrasco gave the story re the "Shaft's Big Score" missing track over at :
http://neverenoughrhodes.blogspot.com/search/label/Gordon%20Parks

... so thanks for that addition, I've added a note at the base of the post to point people into the comments for the download.

Also, Carrasco wanted a better back cover scan, so I've uploaded a 200dpi version here :

I would like to thank you for searching for "Disco Godfather" (there is actually some awesome funky tunes on it) and would like to 2nd funkback's request for "Black Shampoo." Your blogs is always one of the 1st ones I check because I love those funky, funky soundtracks and you always deliver!

SelfScience said...

I'm searching for some of these request. These albums are definitely hard to find. I have went to blaxploitation.com and searched for some of their albums they have reviewed. I have found a couple by Francis Lai I will post. Other than that still diggin.

Jacko said...

It's a good thing to see people becoming more involved with the blog. Everyone has things they're looking for, but the resources and information that the group has collectively will be beneficial to all.

What would be really cool is if we could ever attract the attention of musicians/producers/actors who were involved in the scene and perhaps get a testimonial or some other kind of imput or participation. I'll bet they'd have some really great recollections, insight and even memorabilia to decorate the place up with.

Hello all

I would like to commend the blog administrators here for all of the hard work, dedication and knowledge which is essential to conducting this type of blog.

I have been looking everywhere for an old Blaxploitation soundtrack. It seems as if maybe, The movie score was never pressed for vinyl release because all info is very breif and I haven't seen any used vinyls anywhere (during my years of collecting in the local areas, abroad or on the internet.

The name of the movie is "The Black Godfather" released in 1974 and the score is credited to "Martin Yarbrough". Any help would be appreciated.

SelfScience said...

Well I guess we can add The Black Godfather to the list. I sure do hope we get lucky on some of these. I would take that Sanford & Son Theme is somebody has it. Also, I need some more Quincy Jones to post.

Visuals said...

Selfscience:
Thanks for the quick reply. I have a couple version's of the Sanford & Son Theme. I have the Quincy Jones version which is called "The Streetbeater". This particular version is exactly the same that is used on the sitcom.

I also have another version that was reworked by the Jazz great Lou Donaldson for his 1973 Blue Note album "Sassy Soul Strut". I searched for it for years and finally found it a while back. The version here is an uptempo jazzy sax number that can be quite funky in it's own right and the Sanford theme was my sole reason for tracking the whole album down.

As for other Quincy Jones albums, I have two more...Quincy Jones & Bill Cosby:The Original Jam Sessions - 1969. This album explored Q's funk/jazz sides and includes 3 versions of "Hikky-Burr"...The track that was used as the theme for the (original) "Bill Cosby Show" sitcom back in 1969/70' when Bill starred as Chet Kincaid the basketball coach.

I also have "Quincy Jones - I Heard That"...A soul/funk offering that was released in 76' on A&M Records.

Jacko said...

I haven't heard the Lou Donaldson version. I know there is an abbreviated version used for the actual show, plus a longer, full-length version that Quincy did. I'm not sure if this was available on an album or as a single, though.

SelfScience said...

visuals:
I haven't heard the Lou Donaldson version either. I would like to have that and quincy jones if possible.

Notes
Solid disco-funk and soul soundtrack from Jack Ashford for the obscure blaxploitation movie from 1978 directed by John Evans and starring William Smith, Tony Burton and Frank Christi.

Jack Ashford was part of a group of musicians known as the Funk Brothers whose sound defined Motown in the 60's and 70's. The '80s re-release soundtrack by Alan Silvestri and Gene McDaniels For The Mack aka The Mack and His Pack.
http://www.moviegrooves.com/images/covers_main/mackandpacklp_main.gif
Label: PDC
Date Recorded: 1983
Cat no. ALA1995

Notes
This is the alternative soundtrack to the classic 70s blaxploitation movie The Mack starring Max Julien, Don Gordon and Richard Pryor.

The movie was originally released in 1973 with a great soundtrack by Willie Hutch. In 1983 and 1985 it was rereleased in cinemas to capitalize on the popularity of Richard Pryor and Roger E. Mosely, who were by now household names.

This LP contains the soundtrack for the reissued movie.

It's a great soundtrack with a top-notch, quality 80s soul and funk vibe - whilst also giving a nod to the classic 70s blaxploitation sound.

Composed by Alan Silvestri, The Mack features vocal performances from the great Gene McDaniels (of funk LP classic 'Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse' fame).

"The whole album is tight, funky and sparse in sound; slap bass, soprano sax and toppy guitar predominate. Recommended."

Blog tip :

"Every Nigger is a Star" (soundtrack, 1973) - Boris Gardiner

http://jazzheadz2.blogspot.com/2008/06/check-that-fro.html

Features killer track "Ghetto Funk"

"The Boris Gardiner Happening, or rather Boris and old friend keyboard player Leslie Butler, were commissioned to score a Blaxploitation movie, 'Every Nigger Is A Star', with the main character role going to Calvin Lockheart. It was to be a US production in the style of 'Shaft', 'Super Fly' and 'Trouble Man' and the soundtrack was to reflect the fast paced ghetto storyboard. The highly prized soundtrack album featured one cut of rock solid funk like no one but James Brown's JBs had been able to create. 'Ghetto Funk' was a slice of chattering, slippery Hammond B-3 lead groove from Leslie Butler and was powered along by Boris Gardiner's ferocious bass line. Not only was it a stand out track paying homage to soul-jazz geniuses like Jimmy Smith, but it confirmed that Boris Gardiner was an extraordinary talent, as not only did he pound out a bass line that would make Robert 'Kool & The Gang' Bell sick with envy, but he actually wrote the piece. "

Funkback said...

I'm sorry Brothers! But Musicdawn alerted me to the fact that The Disco 9000 on here ain't the one we're looking for so I'm re-posting my reqest as of now:
Review by Andrew Hamilton AMG

The soundtrack of the movie Disco 9000 (later retitled Fass Black after the blaxploitation flick's main character). Johnnie Taylor had a small part --performing "Disco Lady" -- in the less-than-thrilling box-office flop. Incidentally, "Disco Lady" is not part of the soundtrack. Sony records issued an album with this title in 1998 that is essentially a "best of Johnnie Taylor at CBS" CD and not the original soundtrack. This seven-track album contains two prototype soundtrack instrumentals; the other material, especially the formulaic "Disco 9000," is not Taylor's best. However, "I Love You Woman," "Right Now," and "I Don't Know What I'd Do Without You," are OK bluesers with contemporary productions.
Tracks
1 I Just Don't Know What I'd Do Without You
2 Toot Your Flute
3 Just a Happy Song
4 God Is Standing By
5 Disco 9000
6 I Love You Woman
7 Right Now
Releases
Year Type Label Catalog #
1977 LP Columbia 35004

I've realized that even if Blaxploitation.com seems to be a thoroughly researched place, they've prooved wrong regarding at least Five on the Black hand side. Maybe it's due to some of the stuff on that page's a bit out of date.
That means that there may be entire scores available where they claim only singles issued for example. All I'm saying is do like me and most folks and keep on digging. SelfSience got a full time job being a daddy right now. Let's give him something really funky to come back to huh!?!

Hey Dragonetta,

you were reading my mind. I have been researching on how to start a forum. I think a REAL forum would be more professional compared to what I have set up now. plus I would like a place to post some more links that i have already uploaded to other forums. please contact funk, wone, and me so we can discuss this possibility (selfscience06@gmail.com). Thanks

I have waited ages to hear it, and
Disco Godfather soundtrack is pure gold - from the disco breakouts in the title track to the awesome "Shermanizing/One Way Ticket to hell," which is my favorite
to the fairly straightforward funk jam "Spaced Out." Even the ballad is pretty damned good. Can't thank you enough for getting that rip!

Hello
Just discovered this site mere minutes ago and don't know where to begin! Great stuff.

One query: does anybody have a copy of the 1973 film 'HIT!' starring Billy Dee Williams and Richard Pryor, and directed by Sidny J Furie? I'm in the UK and can't find a copy anywhere.

Thanks again for posting some great films and music!

Funk,

I've made the necessary changes on my end to facilitate the transfer of blaxploitationpride.com to your blog.

You need to make some changes in your Blogger settings in order to activate the transfer. Follow the instructions on this page where it says UPDATE YOUR BLOGGER SETTINGS:
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=55373&ctx=sibling

Only do that part. The rest is done. Then, you'll just need to wait until the domain name change is fully propagated. That should happen within the next day or two. Just keep checking to see if it's working yet. It should bring up your blog when you punch in that domain name. If it doesn't, let me know. Enjoy!
